Current Happenings in ATP...

We just finished up reading Because of Winn-Dixie...that was a sad one! But our group was engaged! Tomorrow we will be moving on to reading Island of the Blue Dolphins. We've had a lot of fun activities since we've been back from spring break! Everyone enjoyed our "clean finger paint" where pictures were covered in saran wrap and kiddos were free to squish and swirl without the mess! We made pudding (the electric mixer is a great sensory tool!) for a couple friends in class. We had a Nature Hunt for Earth Day and read lots of books on gardening. Community activities always bring opportunities for money exchange, choice-making opportunities (gotta address those self-advocacy skills!), and communicating with people in the community.

We finished up reading Roald Dahl's the Twits which our group seemed to enjoy! We've switched up the genre and started Because of Winn-Dixie this week. Kiddos are asked comprehension questions at the end of daily reading by answering in a field of 2 pictures (either by eye gaze or touching their response). Some are working on focusing and tracking pictures and even using yes/no communicative responses. We are enjoying this book so far!

This semester we started reading a new book, Beezus & Ramona! Our group has been enjoying story time (most days!!!). :) We've been doing some fun winter activities including cooking Snowflake Tortillas and a playing in a winter sensory bin. We are looking forward to a fun-filled February with lots of Valentine's Day preparation!

Our library cancelation today ended up working out fine! At Target, the kiddos did a scavenger hunt and then each purchased an item for the Share the Harvest Food Drive. Every year Murrieta Mesa serves a Thanksgiving dinner to over 3,000 people in need!!! They are still in desperate need of frozen turkeys and any other canned/boxed "thanksgiving type" items.

Last Friday we finished reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid. We went to lunch 1/2 hour early so we could watch the movie-- a lot of the kiddos really seemed to enjoy it! Or they really enjoyed our laughter. ;) This week we started our new book; Matilda by Roald Dahl.
We have been working hard to prep for our Halloween party (that's tomorrow). Students have made decorations: ghosts, monsters, and painted pumpkins. They've also been shopping for ingredients that we are using to make snacks! We're putting the finishing touches on Frankenstein pudding and candy corn fruit cups today.
Our class is awesome with participating for spirit week dress-up days! Check out the new pics below. :)

No pics to show at this time! But this week in ATP we have started making decorations for our Halloween party (which will be at classmate Alex's house). In the kitchen we are mixing up "Cinnamon Slop" for a sensory filled experience. Students who are shopping in the community are beginning to purchase items we will use to make snacks for the Halloween party. :)
